Sport – Illistrin National School

Sport

Here at Scoil Naomh Fiachra Illistrin we strive in promoting sport. We engage in many different sports on a regular basis and promote these sports throughout the school to all our pupils. The emphasis is on fun, enjoyment and skills development. Our extensive school grounds enable us enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor training facilities. We currently have basketball, soccer, Gaelic football, camogie, hurling, athletics and rounder’s available to students. Children from various classes attend swimming lessons in the Aura Leisure Centre at various times throughout the school year. Pupils have represented our school in regional, county and Ulster championships in swimming and for aquathlons.

In 2015, Scoil Naomh Fiachra won the award for best primary sports school at the Donegal Sports Star awards. It was a reflection of our achievements in sport through the school year. It also took account of our in school activities such as active week, coaching sessions from local clubs, sports day, community 5k event and development of sports facilities in our school grounds.

Athletics

Pupils at Scoil Naomh Fiachra have participated in a number of athletic events. These include cross country, sports hall, track and field events and aquathlons. Many pupils have won medals for individual and team events.

Gaelic Football/ Indoor Gaelic Football

Gaelic Football has become an integral part of Illistrin school life. Training begins early in September and continues throughout the year twice weekly with Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Mac Mathuna. Many of the boys and girls from 5th and 6th class have been training hard for the Letterkenny Cup and Cumann Na mBunscol this year and are hoping to build on the successes they have had over the last number of years.
